This document discusses cathodic protection of underground petroleum storage tanks and piping systems using sacrificial anode cathodic protection. It describes how sacrificial anode systems work by connecting anodes more electronegative than the metal to be protected. The anodes corrode, protecting the tank or pipe. For underground systems, anodes are typically placed below and around the tank or pipe for uniform current distribution and to keep the anode moist. Electrical connections must have low resistance. Structures are isolated to prevent protecting other nearby metals. Adequate protection is confirmed by measuring at least -0.85V between the structure and a reference electrode.
